A Severa was inaugurated in 1955, by the couple Júlio and Maria José de Barros Evangelista and is the oldest Fado House in Lisbon. Run by the same family for four generations, it is an active part of Fado history and important for the promotion of traditional Portuguese culture.

Located in one of the most typical neighbourhoods of the city – Bairro Alto – A Severa is famous for the authenticity and quality of its food and for its good Fado.

In a cozy candle light atmosphere, you can enjoy a memorable evening to the sound of Fado and the taste of
traditional Portuguese gastronomy.

The name “A Severa” was inspired by the story of the gipsy singer with the same name, who was, according to the legend that dates back to the 19th century, the most famous Fado singer of her time.

Fado represents for the Portuguese people an art of expressing a melancholic or joyful state of soul. Given its cultural value, Fado was considered Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2011, with Lisbon being the capital of this cultural movement.

What’s not to like. First the atmosphere is charming & intimate. Excellent food. Staff friendly, effecient & helpful. And last the musicians were extremely talented. All in all a wonderful night out for 2 tired travellers.

Delicious food, great Fado performance, good service. We had the veal with mushroom sauce and grilled octopus, verdenho and port, and almond cake for dessert. We appreciated the call for a taxi after the dinner show.

Ótima experiência com comida e Fado. O polvo à lagareiro é excelente e o atendimento muito bom. Os preços são bastantes altos mas vale pela experiência com o Fado e a comida ser de ótima qualidade. Por ser um espaço pequeno o espetáculo é muito bom, com excelentes artistas. Espero voltar mais vezes.
